This hilltop Castello dates back to the 13th century and has a history of being the residence of the Friulian aristocracy and played host to the rich and famous; the most notorious being Casanova himself.
The Castle and the surrounding vineyards are now owned by the Pali family, who gave new life to the site and developed a complex named Castello di Spessa Resort.
Castello di Spessa has four separate types of accommodation scattered across the resort; the Castello di Spessa, still in its original condition which gives it a rustic charm; Tavernetta al Castello which is in an ancient farmers cottage; The Vineyard Apartments and La Boatina, a villa that overlooks the vineyards.
The services at the Castello are excellent, including four restaurants, a wine store and a golf course. All in all, it’s a great place to base yourself when visiting the Collio.
Room rates start at 210 euros twin share.
